Weißenfels Savings Bank, Burgland District

Weißenfels Savings Bank

Baroque exterior, modern interior

The main branch of Sparkasse Burgenlandkreis is located in a historic Baroque townhouse on the historic market square in Weißenfels.

In the 1990s, the building was expanded with a modern addition along Marktgasse and Große Kalandstraße to create more space for offices and event rooms. However, the most recent renovation marks a new milestone: the goal was to create a forward-looking, customer-friendly environment and bring the building up to the latest energy standards.

Unified spatial concept and natural materials

The design concept connects the historic and modern parts of the building through clean, natural materials and colors. A recurring element is the geometric “frame” made of oak, which is found throughout the interior—from the reception desk to the consultation offices—and creates a warm, timeless atmosphere. The modern, open ceiling design gives the space a feeling of spaciousness and features a visible installation level.

Lighting Installation and Acoustics as Design Elements

Two three-dimensional light sculptures—“light vines”—run through the entire spatial ensemble as an impressive element, lending the client area a lively dynamism. Exposed areas are accentuated by ring lights, while circular acoustic elements ensure a pleasant ambient sound and a harmonious overall impression.
Rear service area and flexible consultation rooms

The service area features a spacious conference table that can be used for events and meetings outside of business hours. The consultation rooms are arranged in freestanding, acoustically optimized room solutions that ensure both the necessary discretion and optimal space allocation. Among other things, Goldbach Kirchner utilized T10 and T35 system partitions as well as the “GK Space” room-in-room system.

Flexible Back Office and Modern Workplace Design

The modern back office is accessible via an open-concept kitchenette and a coatroom—an open-plan office with flexible workstations and phone booths that offers an ideal balance between teamwork and quiet spaces. Here, too, warm gray tones, wooden elements, and the use of contrasting materials create a pleasant working atmosphere.

Detailed design and local roots

The wall surfaces pay special homage to the region, featuring exclusively designed wallpaper with regional motifs. Designed by graphic artist Luise Worms, this wallpaper gives each room its own character and creates a stylish connection to the surroundings. Eye-catching color accents are provided by the Sparkasse logo, recreated using preserved moss, as well as a floor-to-ceiling wall design.
Comprehensive support from the general planner

The general planner eww – ARCHITEKTEN & INGENIEURE (Halle/Saale) managed the project through all phases—from preliminary planning and construction supervision to the coordination of structural engineering, energy concepts, fire protection, room acoustics, and building services.

The renovation of the Sparkasse branch in Weißenfels combines historic character with state-of-the-art technology and an aesthetic spatial concept that creates an inspiring environment for both customers and employees. From room acoustics and flexible work design to striking lighting design, a unique symbiosis of functionality and design has emerged here—a project that serves as a model for the modern bank branch.
